The Rooster That Almost Got Away
NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST
A Story of Freedom, Faith, and the Call to Return
Last Friday, my neighbor was in full project mode, building a little outdoor hen-house for her new rooster and hen duo. It was shaping up to be a peaceful afternoon.
And then Roosty saw his chance.
With one sudden flap and a bold streak of independence, he darted into the woods behind our homes — crowing proudly, playfully, like a free spirit claiming his wild birthright.
From my window, I saw the whole drama unfold. My neighbor and her daughter followed him, calling softly, trying to lure him back with food and comfort.
But Roosty wasn’t just running — he was revelling in his new-found freedom. Hiding behind the stream, teasing them with every approach, flapping his wings with glee. It was like a game… until the sun began to set.
Out here, predators like coyotes are not a game.
Night fell, and Roosty was still out there, vulnerable.
The Morning After & A Rooster in the Garden
Saturday morning, I looked out the window and saw a small figure near my garden… strutting, pecking, sunbathing.
It was Roosty! Entirely unbothered, enjoying what I’m sure he believed to be a divine breakfast of insects.
I immediately texted my neighbor:
“Roosty is here!”
She and her daughter came rushing out in pajamas, blanket in hand, with hearts full of hope.
But as soon as Roosty saw them, he bolted again, vanishing into the forest.
My heart ached for them. You could feel their frustration, the helplessness.
I decided it was time for a little soul support.
A Surrogate Search & A Silent Prayer
I sat quietly and began scanning the 72 Names of G‑d, focusing on Re’eh – the name of “Lost & Found.”
I didn’t tell them — it felt like a private offering, a spiritual embrace for the whole situation. Because this wasn’t just about a rooster. It was about a soul’s journey.
Roosty was showing us the drama of life itself:
– The instinct to run when things feel confining
– The thrill of false freedom
– The spiritual necessity of return
After nearly 40 minutes, Roosty still wasn’t home. Then inspiration hit me. I texted my neighbor:
“Bring the hen out. Let him see her. Smell her. Remember what he’s connected to.”
Sometimes the soul just needs a mirror — or in Roosty’s case, a hen.
And it worked!
Roosty came running. He reunited with his mate. He was caught — and saved.
What the Rooster Taught Us About the Soul
Two days later, the energy of Roosty’s saga still lingered. I kept thinking:
What was the deeper message here?
That morning, I pulled out Animal Speak by Ted Andrews — a book I hadn’t opened in years. I looked up “Rooster” (or as it appears, “cock” — wink wink), and the entry stunned me:
Keynote: Spirituality, Watchfulness, Resurrection
A solar symbol. The rooster is the herald of the sun, the one who announces its resurrection, and each day’s rebirth. In many traditions, it banishes darkness and evil spirits. It has even been linked to heralding Christ’s birth and to spiritual awakening.
That’s when it hit me —
Roosty’s return wasn’t just a happy ending. It was a metaphor for the soul’s return to light.
A reminder that no matter how far we run, how free we think we are, the true journey is always back to connection, love, and purpose.
And what’s more divine?
We’re now just two days away from Tu B’Av — the Kabbalistic festival of love, unity, and soul re-connection.
Tu B’Av is a celebration of soulmates, of destined reunions, and of love that transcends space and time.
It’s also a day where blockages are lifted, and hearts can return to their truest desires.
Roosty’s journey, believe it or not, fits right in.
The Spiritual Opportunity of Tu B’Av
In Kabbalistic teachings, Tu B’Av is not just “romantic”, it’s a spiritual portal. It’s a time when souls that have wandered — lost in the forest of distraction, fear, or independence — are given a Divine opening to return. To be seen. To be reunited.
Roosty didn’t just come back because of a hen.
He came back because it was time — because a space opened in the heart of those who loved him… and maybe in his own soul, too.
We all have a little Roosty in us. We run, we test the boundaries, we forget the safety of home, of spirit, of love, of our own inner light.
However, when the call comes, the hen’s voice, the sunrise, the inner whisper, we have a chance to RETURN.
A Blessing to Close
May this story — of feathers, forests, and a feisty rooster — remind us that even in chaos, Spirit is present.
That the soul is never truly lost, only searching. And that just like Roosty, we are all capable of finding our way back… especially when love is calling us home.
As Tu B’Av approaches, may we each hear the call…
– To love.
– To reconnect.
– To awaken to the light within and around us.

May your soul always find its way Home.
