Colour Therapy For Mind & Body
Have you ever wondered whether colours have a therapeutic effect on your mood?
Do you find certain colours attractive, while others ‘turn you off’?
Do you experience a healing effect specific colours or the opposite? And do your responses change on any given day, depending on your mood?
Furthermore, have you ever questioned whether your choice of preferred colour(s) is random? Or is there something more to why a colour resonates with you (or not)?
For instance, is it your mood that determines your choices, or your state of consciousness?
Either way, it doesn’t matter which comes first. What’s important is learning about the effects of colours and how they can be used as a tool for balancing your energy.
What if you could better manage your mood, including your overall mental and physical well-being? Simply through the use of colour therapy, to harmoniously support your mind and body?
Well, since antiquity, colour-spectrum therapy has been a prevalent healing practice. The author and healer, Pliny the Elder of Ancient Rome, proposed various colours of precious stones to support the body’s ability to heal faster.
The Healing Power of Coloured Gem Stones
For example, red gemstones (like the blood-stone, carnelian, red jasper and ruby), whose spiritual properties are often associated with the Root Chakra, were recommended to stop bleeding.
In China, healers were able to cure abdominal discomforts by gently massaging their patient’s stomach area with the yellow colour (the Solar Plexus Chakra).
In the Western world, the influence of colour therapy has given way to a better scientific understanding of light as electromagnetic energy. The colour of light is determined by its frequency.
How does the energy of colour and light work?
The prospect that the energy of light could work together and affect the energetic vibration of a living organism, motivated the introduction of modern-day colour-spectrum therapy.
It was in the year 1877 when colour therapy became popular. Englishmen, Dawns and Blunt, discovered that the use of ultraviolet light could cure rickets (a condition of the softening/weakening of bones in children due to severe and prolonged vitamin D deficiency).
Science explains that the ultraviolet radiation (which is an aspect of sunlight), facilitates a biochemical reaction in the skin that then produces vitamin D; thereby, correcting the vitamin deficiency that causes rickets.
Colour-spectrum therapy can also assist in alleviating the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
SAD is a specific kind of depression associated with the dark months of winter, when people spend less time outdoors in direct sunlight. The condition can be improved by exposing oneself to an appropriate light source that simulates sunlight.
Exposing the retinas of the eyes to this light seems to be significant, as exposure to the therapeutic mechanism affects the brain’s chemistry (neurotransmitters) in a helpful way. Some scientific basis has been found to indicate that light can enhance a person’s overall health and well-being.
Within certain Eastern spiritual healing traditions, is also incorporated a chromatic interpretation (the scientific aspects of colour and light) of the body’s chakras, or human energy system.
The focus is usually on the 7 chakras:
1. Root Chakra
2. Sacral Chakra
3. Solar Plexus Chakra
4. Heart Chakra
5. Throat Chakra
6. Third Eye Chakra
7. Crown Chakra
Each chakra is associated with a resonating distinctive colour. For example, the Heart Chakra is represented by the colour, green. It is believed that exposure to certain colours has a health-enhancing effect on its relevant energy centre, and the mind and body.
After many years of experimentation, American doctor, John Lieberman, discovered that when a ray of light passes along the eye’s optic nerve, it splits into two parts. One shaft creates a visual image of the object in the brain, and the other one affects the hypothalamus.
The hypothalamus is the organ responsible for maintaining your heart rhythm, the body’s temperature, and feelings of happiness, joy, love or fear, among others. Our brain responds differently to various light and stimulates hormonal production with the assistance of the endocrine system.
How do colours affect our health?
Knowledge of how colours affect us can be helpful to our overall wellness and maintenance of health.
See below chart…
For example,

RED Light:
Associated with the Root Chakra, helps increase vitality and physical strength.

ORANGE Light:
Associated with the Sacral chakra, can help stabilize kidney function.

YELLOW Light:
Associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, aids with stomach and digestive discomforts.

GREEN Light:
Associated with the Heart Chakra, can help improve cardio-vascular function and blood systems.

BLUE Light:
Can assist in calming the nerves and decreasing feelings of depression.

INDIGO Light:
Associated with the Third Eye Chakra, supports vision, calms the mind and alleviates headaches and migraines.

VIOLET Light:
Associated with the Crown Chakra, can rejuvenate us with the assistance of the body’s production of certain hormones; like melatonin which aids with sleep.
Science has established that biochemical progression and metabolism in the brain and body, are accompanied by electrical signals.
These signals can be detected with electrocardiograms and electroencephalograms.
As scientific instruments become more refined, one day we might possibly be able to better detect and characterize the chakras within the human energy system.
Something that has already been figured in Eastern tradition for thousands of years.
Fortunately, the Western mindset has finally begun to catch up with Eastern Wisdom. Today, the medical industry uses the signals produced by the human heart and brain for diagnostic purposes.
Modern medical science no longer fervently disputes the validity of Eastern spirituality, medicine and philosophy.
Practices like yoga, qigong, tai chi and colour-therapy meditation, are influenced and guided by the theory of chakras and their associated colours, and energy meridians in the body.
More and more people are incorporating such practices into their daily routines, for longevity and well-being.
The beauty about these ancient Eastern practices described above, is that they are simple to do and highly effective. Dedicating just 10 minutes each day, will not only start you off on a positive note, but you will also feel more energetic, radiant, invigorated, and joyful!
